Sunflower acid oil is a by-product of sunflower oil refining. It is a rich source of free fatty acids with small amounts of sterols and glycerides. Sunflower acid oil is widely used as a raw material in surface coating purposes.
The soap-water-oil mixture obtained in the sunflower oil neutralization process is sulfuric treated in an acid vessel and acidified at high temperature. This process separates fatty matter from the soap stock, which is called acid oil. The acid oil is therefore a byproduct of sunflower oil. It finds its use in the production of detergents and soaps, in addition to applications in mining, oil, chemical and other industries. The sunflower acid oil contains free fatty acids along with sterols and glycerides in small amounts. This byproduct is stored and packaged in tanker and barrels, respectively. This liquid byproduct of sunflower oil refining is not for human consumption. Its acid value is 10 minimum, saponification value is 185 minimum, iodine value is 115 minimum, and moisture content is 2% maximum.
